Drs. Timur Alexeev and Cem Altunbas of the University of Colorado Radiation Oncology department have invented an automated image correction method to suppress artifacts, such as rings, in radiographic images. It improves upon the current techniques in that it is robust, is capable or locating and suppressing such artifacts without use intervention, and performs equally well for different types of artifacts. Additionally, final image quality is improved by at least two fold when compared with standard image correction techniques. The method was developed specifically for Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) but it has applications to other imaging techniques which are affected by the presence of artifacts.
